In the Coastal Dynamics Laboratory at Stanford University we study how physical processes shape coastal waters – combining principles of fluid mechanics, oceanography, and ecology. We use both field observations and numerical experiments to examine circulation in the coastal ocean, its natural variability, influence on marine ecosystems, and human-nature interactions. Our work addresses some of society’s biggest challenges relating to ocean health, mitigation of climate impacts, and energy resources.
